IUSM Strategic Plan

Information technology (IT) is playing an increasingly important part in supporting the missions of the School of Medicine. While there are elements of superb technology applications within IUSM and available to IUSM, the school did not have an integrated approach to IT initiatives.

In response, Dean Craig Brater initiated the development of this plan to identify and address the following issues around technology:

  • Identify key technology issues currently facing the school
  • Detail methods of making technology decisions and utilizing technology to assist the school in its missions of education, research, and clinical service
  • Identify ways to assist the school in achieving its goal of becoming a Top Ten medical school
  • Develop methods to better leverage Indiana University Information Technology (UITS) resources

Task forces aligned with the core functional areas of the school were convened with representation from all constituent groups. Several key themes emerged, the predominant of which was the requirement to install a senior-level leader charged with creating a school-wide Information Services organization. The focus of the new organization is to assist the school and all its constituent groups in achieving their missions, as well as coordinating enhanced communication with the strategic partners of the school including, IUMG, Clarian, Wishard, VA, area hospitals and health centers, UITS, and others.

The result of the process is the Information Technology Plan 2002.
